Can I pause my pension contributions?
Can I pause my pension contributions?
Updated over 6 months ago

Yes, this is possible. Note though that the conditions for pausing pension contributions vary depending on the country and for how long you've been enrolled in the pension scheme. Let's analyse it in more detail.

Ireland

Employees based in Ireland with an Irish Life pension scheme are entitled to pause contributions for an undetermined period or even completely opt out.

  • To pause your contributions, open Kota's mobile app, go to the Retirement section and select 'Pause contributions', or directly choose 'Change contribution' and then set your personal contribution to 0%.

  • In the specific case you decide to opt out of the pension scheme, be aware that you're entitled to get a refund of the contributions you've paid if you've been in the pension scheme for less than two years. Learn more about it here.

UK

If you wish to pause your contributions, you should log that request directly with the pension scheme provider, by signing in to their website here. Then, follow Smart Pension's step-by-step guide on how to opt out or cease your membership.

Note that you may be automatically re-enrolled into the scheme during your employer's mandatory re-enrolment process (which usually occurs every 3 years), depending on your eligibility status at that time. If that's the case, you'll be informed in advance.
