A pension will future-proof you for your retirement and your contributions are tax deductible. So in the long term, it's a win-win situation.  Yet, when to start a pension scheme is a decision completely up to you. If you would like some advice on your pension, talking to a pension advisor is the best place to start.

What about the state welfare pension?

The state contributory pension currently becomes available from 66 and adds about €10,000/year to your income in retirement. You are eligible for the state pension if you have enough PRSI contributions - you can read more about that here.
